This is an especially attractive Victorian lavalier pendant dating from the late 19th century, circa 1890. It's set with a triumvirate of blue sapphire, natural pearl, and old cut diamond, with stones set in silver (15k gold backed) designed to imitate ribbons. The chain is detachable from two points at the top of the pendant, and fittings screw into the back for wear as a brooch.

The lavalier necklace is named after Duchess Louise de La Vallière, mistress of French King Louis XIV, who popularised the style in the 17th century. Although there are a few different interpretations, they're usually characterised by a gem-set drop at the bottom, generally elongated form, and two points at the top where the chain attached. There was a resurgance in popularity towards the end of the Victorian era, that continued into the first decades of the 20th century. Pieces from this time, such as this one, were usually featured graceful floral-, foliate-, or ribbon-themed curves with open spaces between, and evolved to incorporate design elements of the Art Nouveau period as it developed.
